It's true that the Dreamcast version had a leg up over their ports in a lot of respects. Makes tracking down the original more rewarding.

Exactly why I impulse purchased it when at a convention. I beat the whole thing on an actual DC. My favorite way of playing is SADX PC modded with the Dreamcast Conversion. Basically the Dreamcast version in HD. Plus it still has Mission Mode and cutscene skipping and such.

^Yeah, to PC version with the Dreamcast conversion mod is pretty much the definitive way to play it, second only to Sonic Adventure International on the Dreamcast.

In the classic era, Sonic CD is one of my favorites- being one of the few classic games I managed to beat (I suck at classic Sonic  ), its music, stages, and animated cutscenes have taken my retro heart.
The Dreamcast era is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, hands down. SA2B was the first Sonic game to hook me into SEGA after years of being a Nintendo fan. If my Wii was hooked up, I would be playing SA2B daily- that's how much I still love this game. It has its flaws, both gameplay and story wise, that I can admit. The game doesn't hold up that well when compared to Modern Sonic (and at the same time, kinda does?), but I still find enjoyment out of it.
Modern era has Sonic Generations. I admittedly haven't played most of the modern games, due to observing multiple gamebreaking glitches in them (Sonic 06, Sonic Boom, ect), but Sonic Generations was a wonderful breath of air when compared to the other modern games.

Honestly recent Sonic games feel incredibly thin compared to the Adventure era games, which had much richer content and attention to detail.

The blase approach to storytelling especially stands out. It feels like nothing important has happened in the Sonic universe since Shadow the Hedgehog.

My favorite would have to be Sonic Adventure. Fun levels, amazing soundtrack, and a good (though a little corny) story.

i've always adored the adventure games, even if they aged like crap. i really wish sonic team would revisit the gameplay style

For 3d SA2 is my favorite although colors isn't too far behind.

For 2d sonic rush is definitely my favorite, mostly due to the soundtrack.

Adventure and Adventure 2 are my favourite, by a long shot. I consider both games the fullest experiences in the series so far.

Honourable mentions to CD, 3&K and Generations. CD for its aesthetics, 3&K for its content and Gens for its playability.

But overall, it has to be one of the Adventure games for me. Probably Adventure 2 because I play it more nowadays.
